- DO OUR SENIORS MATTER? IN NEW YORK STATE THE ANSWER APPEARS TO BE – NO, THEY DO NOT!
by Jeff Adams
Do our seniors matter? In New York State, the answer appears to be a resounding no. There are 606 nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities in New York. More than two-thirds (428 to be precise) have been accused of violating New York State law for the bare minimum levels of staff in these facilities. Is staffing important? Absolutely! Probably every credible study conducted regarding the most critical factor in preventing injury, harm and abuse occur. Mind you, we are not discussing the highest level of staffing – we are talking about the lowest possible level of safe…

- Even More Bad Nursing Homes and The Bad Men Who Run Them

Several years ago, I wrote about some of the “bad” men who are permitted to own and operate nursing homes, questioning, why is this allowed to occur? My aim was to shed some light on the vulnerability of those who must reside in a long-term care facility; and in particular, nursing homes. Unfortunately, this epidemic has only gotten worse. So now I ask, why is this allowed to continue? You select a nursing home based upon trust and promises. It is horrifying that when that trust is broken, and your loved one suffers as a result. My…

- Too Many Nursing Homes Are Receiving Failing Grades
by Jeff Adams
Why Do So Many Nursing Homes Rate So Poorly New York State has over 600 nursing homes. All industries and businesses require regulation and oversight. Due to their special status of protectors of our senior citizens and those vulnerable members of society, they too require a watchful eye. The federal government and each state aim to improve and enhance care provided to consumers with valuable information when selecting a nursing home. Annually, The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) conducts audits and rates nursing homes. Part of this process includes looking at staffing levels, resident safety…

It Comes Down to 3 Simple Words: Staffing, Staffing, Staffing The single, most sure-fire way to improve safety in nursing homes comes down to one word: staffing. Nursing home owners and operators know this. So why are nursing homes frequently understaffed? And why do nursing home owners and operators fight any rule that would improve resident safety, and prevent injury, neglect and abuse of their residents – your loved one? Sadly it simply comes down to avarice, greed, and money. We do not have the money to hire more people staffing is not the issue, Covid-19 is…

Nursing Home Harm and Abuse We previously blogged on this topic. Partly because of the response and feedback received, and partly because conditions are worsening, we felt compelled to comment again. At least one peer reviewed study confirms “that investor-owned nursing homes provide worse care and less nursing care than nonprofit or public homes. Investor-owned facilities averaged 5.89 deficiencies per home, 46.5 percent higher than nonprofit and 43.0 percent higher than public facilities, and also had more of each category of deficiency.” Misusing taxpayer money, leaving residents in their urine and feces, and neglecting residents were identified…

What is the lingual nerve? The lingual nerve is a sensory nerve imbedded in your Jaw. It is a major nerve that supplies feeling to floor of your mouth and the front two-thirds of the tongue. Visitors to nursing homes throughout New York State and Northern New Jersey have most likely encountered this directive: “Sorry, we need you to leave the room now as we are going to attend to your loved one”. Obsequiously, and with nary a second thought, we comply. Recently, we’ve come to wonder why most nursing homes make this their standard practice. Why are family and friends asked to leave the room? Why do we not ask “why”? Does the nursing home have a legitimate reason for this directive? The answer, as one might suspect, is easy – or…

Following is a joint statement issued by the Long Term Care Community Coalition and the Center for Medicare Advocacy. The statement is available at https://nursinghome411.org/ltccc-comments. December 11, 2018 – Staffing is perhaps the most important factor in a nursing home resident’s quality of care and ability to live with dignity.
