More Bad Nursing Homes and The Bad Men Who Run Them
Nursing Home Harm and Abuse
We previously blogged on this topic. Partly because of the response and feedback received, and partly because conditions are worsening, we felt compelled to comment again.
At least one peer reviewed study confirms “that investor-owned nursing homes provide worse care and less nursing care than nonprofit or public homes. Investor-owned facilities averaged 5.89 deficiencies per home, 46.5 percent higher than nonprofit and 43.0 percent higher than public facilities, and also had more of each category of deficiency.”
Misusing taxpayer money, leaving residents in their urine and feces, and neglecting residents were identified in a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Residents of Beth Abraham Center in the Bronx, Buffalo Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Holliswood Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Queens and Martine Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Westchester County, owned and operated by Centers Health Care, suffered the indignity and neglect that caused or contributed to death, infections, bedsores, and other health maladies (as identified by AG James).
Kenneth Rozenberg is the founder and chief executive of Centers Health Care. With an estimated net worth as high as one-billion dollars, he has a network of forty-five facilities and is responsible for over one million people every year.
The typical means by which bad owners’ profit is by having separate corporate ownership of the building, the real estate upon which it sits, and services provided in the home. This creates how finances can be manipulated. New Jersey has legislation pending? That provides for greater transparency and would require “opening the books”.
Among the reasons why it is important for family members and consumer advocacy groups to call out harm and abuse and to let the public know about “bad” nursing homes. Equally as important to bring about change are lawsuits that target specific harm and abuse.
We publish this blog not to shame nursing homes and their owners, but to highlight the avarice and self-interest of those who put profits ahead of people.
