September 11, 2001
Most people stepped up in very meaningful, admirable, and substantial ways. We tried to contribute as best we could. I handled two pro bono (without fee) cases for victims and their families.
In the aftermath of “9-11”, lawyers organized themselves. Through an organization that was established and called “Trial Lawyers Care”, we mobilized and made ourselves available. The goal was to represent the victims and their families, without any legal fee, in the federally established Victims Compensation Fund.
We were privileged and honored to represent 2 families. Both had lost a loved one and both surviving spouses had young children.
One family we represented were the spouse and 2 minor children of a woman who worked in the Towers. At the Hearing we were able to demonstrate and substantiate her loss for a substantial 7-figure recovery.
The other family was the spouse of 2 young children, who was 8 months pregnant with their third. He was a Port Authority Police Officer who selflessly responded to the scene. He likely knew his fate, but honorably accepted the call to duty. Among the last things he did was to call his wife, tell her he loved her and the children, and that all would be fine. Our client actually witnessed his death, as she watched Tower 2 go down, she called his Sergeant and learned he was in that building. Her, too, the recovery was 7+ figures.
We were all affected. Regrettably, many made the ultimate sacrifice. May the memories of all those lost and injured continue to be for an inspiration and blessing to all.
Client Testimonial: “As a retired law enforcement professional it is refreshing to know that attorneys like Jeff are actually out there and represent you as a person and not just another number. Jeff is an attorney I trust and the first person I call in any legal matter to get advice or recommendations…”
