Legionella Bacteria Found at Rockland Nursing Home
Recent testing confirms that Legionella bacteria was found in water samples collected from Pine Valley Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing located in Hillcrest, New York.
Legionella, also known as Legionnaires Disease, is a potentially dangerous condition. It may cause pneumonia and other potentially dangerous ailments.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. However, this does not mean that there are no injuries or harmful effects. If you or someone you know suspects that they have been injured, seek out immediate medical attention.
One of the most common ways it is spread is through a shared water environment, such as in a nursing home. Signs or symptoms typically begin within the first few days for up to 2 weeks. What to watch for: coughing, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches and/or headaches. Other warning signs are diarrhea and nausea.
This very serious situation was known by Pine Valley and reported to the New York State Health Department on October 31, 2019. Why this information was only reported to the general public late in the day on November 4, 2019 is anyone’s guess. The public should have been immediately informed.
Those at most risk of harm are seniors and those who have weakened immune systems. Former smokers, chronic lung disease, cancer, diabetes are all conditions that may weaken the immune system.
The common name of the disease, Legionnaires Disease, is traced to its discovery during a convention of the American Legion in 1976, when an outbreak was revealed. According to the Centers for Disease Control there were approximately 7,500 reported cases in 2017. However, the condition is often incorrectly or underdiagnosed the numbers may be quite higher. This may be one reason why there has been a steady rise in the number of reported cases over the last several years.
Again, and fortunately there have been no reported cases of illness. However, if you suspect illness or for peace of mind do not hesitate to contact your physician.
